OVERVIEW: The Yu-2 is a Chinese lightweight, straight-running torpedo that entered service in 1971, using gyroscopic guidance without homing capability. It was designed for launch from surface vessels or aircraft against submarines in shallow to mid-depth waters.

DETAILS: The "Yu" (鱼) designation is the standard for Chinese torpedoes, and "2" indicates its early placement in China's torpedo development program. The Yu-2 was developed based on the Italian Whitehead A244 torpedo (RAT-52), likely acquired through indirect channels, and simplified for domestic production. It was powered by an electric propulsion system, had a straight course determined by gyroscopic stabilization, and carried a small high-explosive warhead for ASW roles. Its operational effectiveness was limited due to its lack of homing and relatively short range, leading to eventual replacement by guided systems like the Yu-3.

TYPE: Lightweight Straight-Running Torpedo

FUNCTION: Once launched from a surface platform or aircraft, the Yu-2 runs a preset straight course guided by an internal gyroscope. It is designed for use against submarines in known or fixed positions, relying entirely on pre-launch targeting data.

NOTE:
IOC: 1971 (Yu-2), retired by 1983
